King Zwelethini Stadium

Location

This stadium is in the township of Umlazi, south-west of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The address is given as Griffiths Mxenge Highway & Ephraim Mdala Maphumulo Street, Umlazi D, Umlazi 4031. The capacity is listed at around 10,000 seats.

Naming & Significance

The stadium is named after King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, who was the reigning Zulu King for many years. Naming the stadium after him underscores its cultural resonance within the local Zulu community.

History & Features

  • Originally, the venue had a capacity of around 5,000, but ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup it was upgraded (around 2009/2010) and expanded to 10,000.
  • It was intended to serve as a training venue for the World Cup teams, but apparently the teams were staying in the north of Durban, making this location less optimal so it ended up not being used as expected for that purpose.
  • The stadium is multi-purpose but mostly used for football matches.
  • It is also owned/operated by eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.

Community & Context

Located in Umlaziβ€”a large township with strong football cultureβ€”King Zwelithini Stadium provides a local venue for sporting and cultural events, contributing to township infrastructure and community life. The upgrade in 2010–era built legacy infrastructure for community use beyond the World Cup.
